The Philosophy of Religion
This course examines the core claims of major monotheistic religions through the lens of analytic philosophy. Among the questions we will consider: What is meant by the term "God?" Are there strong rational grounds for belief in the existence of God? If God exists, why is there so much suffering in the world? Is eternal life possible or even desirable? What are we to make of the varieties of religious experience? If religion is a force for good in the world, why has it engendered so much pain, death, and destruction? What might religion teach us about human nature?
