Discover the delicious flavors of Somalia with our hands-on cooking class. Participants will learn to prepare two favorite dishes: sambusa with seasoned beef, paired with malawah, a Somali sweet pancake. Bring to class: take-home container for leftovers. Enter door 1.

Creating Crop Art (For the State Fair or Just for Fun)
Creative
Seed art is a long-time tradition at the Minnesota State Fair. Using assorted crop seeds, artists glue them to boards and other surfaces to make beautiful and creative works of art. This class will provide an introduction to crop art including a brief history, styles, specific techniques for making a seed art design, and how to enter your work in the State Fair. Participants will have an opportunity to make a work of their own to bring home. Tuition includes supplies. About the Instructors: Amy and Steve Saupe are a father/daughter seed art team who have won multiple blue ribbons for their seed art entries at the Minnesota State Fair. Enter door 1.

Introduction To Chess (13+)

Chess is a complete brain workout that embodies elements of art, science and sport. Beginner and intermediate players will expand their skills, develop strategy, improve pattern recognition and even relieve some stress. Participants are encouraged to bring their own chess sets and a notebook but this is not required. About the Instructor: Mr. Long Chen has placed in the top three in chess tournaments in Laredo, TX; St. Cloud, MN; and Berlin, Germany since age nine. He has a Lichess rating of 2100+ in both Blitz and Rapid formats.

Music Lessons for Adults - Beginner, Intermediate or Beyond

Do you want to learn how to play guitar, bass guitar, banjo, mandolin, or ukulele? Led by Steve Cekalla's Guitar and Music School, these professionally-led group lessons are matched to your skill level. You’ll receive three virtual 30-minute group lessons that is fun for beginners, or a more technique and theory-focused for those with instrument experience. Bring to class: your own instrument, however a limited number of guitars are available if requested prior to the start of classes. Contact information to schedule classes will be given at the time of registration.

Needle-Felted Art: 3D Landscape in a Mug

NEW! Experience needle felting in three dimensions by creating a unique miniature landscape scene that will sit on top of a mug. Beginners and those with experience are welcome. Bring to class: a reference photo for inspiration or pick from images provided in class. A selection of mugs will be provided in class. Enter door 1.

The January 29th class will feature classic landscapes while the April 16th class will feature serene beach scenes. Beginners and those with experience are welcome! Painting Barn Quilt Workshop

Barn quilts tell stories of farms, families, historical events and communities, and painting them has become a popular and rewarding artistic experience. Instructor Cynthia Buchholz will guide you through the process from start to finish to create a barn quilt that represents your creative expression. With a weather proof 2' x 2' aluminum composite panel, over 60 high quality paints and all other materials provided, you will leave with your own masterpiece ready to hang and be admired at your home, outbuilding, or business. A $60.00 supplies fee is due at the beginning of class and includes all materials needed. No experience is necessary. Enter door 1.

Pottery for Adults: Beginner or Intermediate (16+)

Whether you are new to clay or have some previous experience, you'll improve your skills with art teacher Melanie Pattay. Beginners will start with the basics of throwing cups, bowls, and plates. More experienced potters can expand on their skills with larger pieces, adding handles, lids, and manipulating pieces after throwing. Three sessions will focus on wheel throwing, while the final session is reserved for painting your pieces in a watercolor style. Items will be fired after the final class and available for pickup at the Community Ed office. Participants will take home up to 5 finished pieces. Pick up date/time will be communicated with participants. Enter door 30.
